National Geographic G Adventures Safari Our family of four (mother 70’s, parents 40’s, child 11) are in the middle of a National Geographic/G Adventures safari in Tanzania. This has already been the trip of a lifetime. The “tent” camps and hotels chosen for us have been great (especially Serengeti Tortilis Camp!), the transfers seamless, and the people friendly. What has really set this trip apart so far are our safari guide (CEO), Michael, and our driver, Rogert. Their knowledge and patience seemed limitless and their humor was an added bonus. When my son expressed a keen interest in the small mammals, dikdik and hyrax, they went out of their way to find these elusive animals for us. When asked to describe Michael and Rogert, my family said, “friendly, hilarious (Rogert’s sense of humor is clever and dry and his comedic timing spot on, Michael’s sense of humor is obvious immediately upon meeting him), made us feel at home, knowledgeable, patient, and engaged”. They made the first half of our trip priceless. They are the reason I am compelled to write this review! G Adventures emphasizes sustainable travel. The introduction to the Masai Clean Cookstove Project and the Mto Wa Mbu walking tour and lunch (thank you, Mama Wema!) were highlights. Our son even got to help with a few bricks and “mortar” while we were there. What 11 y/o doesn’t want to get their hands in the mud? They also emphasize conservation and education through their guides and through lectures from local researchers. We were fortunate enough to get a presentation from a local lion researcher as a planned event. We even got a spontaneous lecture from a team of field researchers working with hyrax (led by Professor Lucas Pelkmans of the University of Zürich) and camping near Serengeti Tortilis Camp! They came directly from the field to talk with us after dinner. This lecture was arranged by the manager of Tortilis Camp, William, after hearing our son loves hyrax. The focus on education was so appreciated! We will absolutely travel with G Adventures again and, if we have the privilege of coming back to Tanzania, will ask to have Michael as a guide, Rogert as a driver, and Serengeti Tortilis Camp as our base.
